Foster's Raid
 Gen. John D. Foster
|
In 1862, U.S. Army garrisons in eastern North Carolina attacked internal Confederate supply lines to enhance the coastal blockade. On December 11, Gen. John D. Foster led raiders west from New Bern to burn the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad bridge over the Neuse River at Goldsboro and to draw attention from Gen. Ambrose E. Burnside's attack at Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Foster captured Kinston, fought at Whitehall, burned the Goldsboro bridge, and then returned to New Bern on December 21. The Confederates repaired the bridge within two weeks.
